Prince of Peace Apostolic Church

In the heart of Chicago, the Prince of Peace Apostolic Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and community. It’s a story of humble beginnings, visionary leadership, and a commitment to serving God and its neighbors. The Prince of Peace Apostolic Church started its journey in 1945. Evangelist Senia Johnson, driven by divine inspiration, began prayer meetings with her husband and a small group of women in a modest building at 40th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. This humble space, affectionately known as “under the steps,” marked the birth of what would become a cornerstone of faith for many. Evangelist Johnson’s leadership transformed this small prayer group into the Prince of Peace Gospel Mission. The mission moved several times, first to South Vincennes Avenue, then to East 75th Street, always expanding its reach and impact under Pastor Johnson’s guidance. A significant shift occurred in 1966 when Elder John H. McCall took the helm. He renamed the mission to the Prince of Peace Apostolic Church. Recognizing the need for a permanent home, he led the church to purchase its current location at 6848-50 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in 1991. This was a testament to his vision and dedication. Under Elder McCall’s leadership, the Prince of Peace Apostolic Church flourished for 43 years. He was elevated to District Elder in 1983 and consecrated as Suffragan Bishop in 1995. His leadership nurtured numerous ministries, empowering young ministers to spread the gospel and establish new churches. The Prince of Peace Apostolic Church became a beacon of hope, inspiring young and old with the message of empowerment through Christ. Following Suffragan Bishop McCall’s passing in 2008, his son, District Elder John S. McCall, Sr., continued his father’s legacy. He expanded the church’s outreach programs. These included a Nursing Home Ministry, a Life Insurance Assistance Program, and annual Thanksgiving and Back to School events. This ensured the church remained a vital part of the community. In 2019, Elder Kermit DeLashment became the pastor, bringing a fresh perspective for the 21st century. His mission is to restore integrity and resources to the church, addressing the challenges faced by modern believers. He embraces Apostolic tradition while challenging conventional theology. His goal is to create a spiritually vibrant community relevant to today’s world. The Prince of Peace Apostolic Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of community. Its journey from “under the steps” to its present-day location reflects the unwavering commitment of its leaders and members.
