Can you believe this spot, right by Primrose Hill Bridge, was once a notorious hangout for highwaymen? Primrose Hill Bridge, connecting Primrose Hill to Regent’s Park and London Zoo, isn’t just a picturesque crossing. It’s a gateway to a rich and sometimes scandalous past. Primrose Hill itself, opened to the public in 1842, was once part of Henry VIII’s hunting grounds. Imagine the king and his entourage thundering through here on horseback, chasing deer through the dense woods. Centuries later, after the land became Crown property, the area around Primrose Hill Bridge became a popular spot for Londoners. There were playgrounds, toilets, and easy access to the zoo. But it also attracted some less desirable characters. Highwaymen, taking advantage of the somewhat isolated location, would lie in wait for unsuspecting passersby crossing Primrose Hill Bridge. They’d relieve them of their valuables before disappearing back into the shadows of the park. The area has also seen its share of darker moments. In 1678, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey was mysteriously murdered right here on Primrose Hill. Three men were hanged for the crime, though they were later exonerated. For a brief time, the hill was even called Greenberry Hill, after the unfortunate accused. Today, with its view of central London, Primrose Hill and its bridge are peaceful spots. It’s hard to imagine the highwaymen and the murder that once haunted this place. Primrose Hill Bridge now connects families to the zoo and allows visitors to climb the hill for stunning views. It stands as a reminder of how much an area can change over time.
