“Eu faço parte desta história.” This powerful theme resonates as we stand before the Primeira Igreja Batista de Niterói. This church isn’t just a building. It is a living testament to faith and community.

Founded on May 1 1892 the Primeira Igreja Batista de Niterói has been a beacon of hope for over 130 years. It all began with a small group of seven members. Six were women and one was a man. They gathered in the home of missionary William Buck Bagby. He served as their first pastor. This humble beginning sparked a legacy.

The Primeira Igreja Batista do Rio de Janeiro played a crucial role. They organized two churches one in Campos and another here in Niterói. The Igreja Batista de Niterói quickly became a vital part of the community.

The ladies of the church showed considerable support. In August 1893 they formed the first Sociedade de Senhoras in Brazil. It was later named Sociedade Feminina Missionária. Today it is known as Mulheres Cristãs em Ação MCA. These women helped lay the foundation for the church’s future.

The early days were not without challenges. The Revolução de 1893 disrupted life in Brazil. Evangelization efforts suffered particularly in Niterói and Rio de Janeiro. Yet the determined members of Primeira Igreja Batista de Niterói remained steadfast. They continued their work undeterred.

In April 1901 the church faced terrible persecution. Their furniture their pulpit and belongings were burned in the street. O País newspaper reported on this event. At the time the church met on Rua São Lourenço. Pastor Florentino Rodrigues da Silva led the congregation.

Throughout its history the Primeira Igreja Batista de Niterói has had many dedicated pastors. William Buck Bagby served in 1892. Salomão L. Guinsburg led in 1892-1895 and again in 1913-1914. W. E. Entzminger served multiple terms. A. B. Deter and O. P. Maddox also guided the church. J.J. Taylor served in 1914-1915. Manoel Avelino de Souza was pastor for many years. Harold E. Renfrow served as interim pastor. Nilson do Amaral Fanini led from 1964 to 2005. Ebenézer Soares Ferreira served as interim pastor. José Laurindo Filho became pastor in 2006. Each pastor has contributed to the church’s rich history.

Located on Rua Marquês do Paraná the Primeira Igreja Batista de Niterói stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to the unwavering faith of its members. As we reflect on its 130-year journey may we all remember “Eu faço parte desta história.” You are now a part of its story too.
