Where the whispers of the Dresden Heide meet the gentle rush of the Prießnitz River, there lies a hidden gem. This gem is known as the Prießnitzwasserfall. It is a testament to nature’s artistry and the quiet power of time. The Prießnitzwasserfall may not be a towering cascade. But its charm lies in its delicate beauty and the unique geological formations that surround it. The Prießnitzwasserfall is nestled within the 2.1-hectare natural monument, “Prießnitz-Wasserfall und Uferhänge.” This protected area is part of the larger Dresden Heide landscape protection zone. It is located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of the Prießnitz Valley Viaduct. This natural monument showcases a fascinating geological feature. A pleistocene epigenetic valley cuts through Lausitzer granodiorite. This granodiorite, usually hidden beneath sandy soil, is exposed here. It forms a disturbance line that creates the small waterfall with a drop of about one meter. The waterfall is formed by the Prießnitz River. It’s on its middle course as it flows through the Dresden Heide. The river takes a dramatic turn just past the waterfall. It shifts from a northwestern course towards the southwest. The banks of the Prießnitzwasserfall offer a unique botanical treasure. The rare Huperzia selago, or stag’s-horn clubmoss thrives on the rocky areas. This species is typically found in mountainous coniferous forests. Its presence at this lower elevation is quite remarkable. Even more special is the presence of Actaea spicata, or baneberry, on the left bank. This is the only known location of this plant within the entire Dresden Heide. The Prießnitzwasserfall and its surrounding area are protected as a natural monument. This designation underscores their importance in preserving Dresden’s natural heritage. This quiet corner of the Dresden Heide invites you to pause. Listen to the murmur of the water and appreciate the delicate interplay of geology and botany.
