Prey er Mountain is located directly West of Kigali city center. The majority of Nyarugenge District is located on its slopes. The western slopes meet the Nyabarongo River valley. The name Kigali itself traces back to this very spot.
King Cyilima I Rungwe in the 14th Century conquered this mountain. Looking at the vast land he exclaimed “Burya iki gihugu ni Kigali”. It means “This country is vast”. From that moment the area became known as Kigali. The city later adopted the name.
