How did a faith born in 17th-century England find a home in modern-day Rwanda? Here at Friends Church in Kigali, that story unfolds. Friends Church, also known as the Religious Society of Friends, arrived in Rwanda in 1986. It was a relatively recent arrival, but its impact has been profound. Friends Church quickly became a beacon of hope, especially after the devastating 1994 genocide. The church played a vital role in rebuilding Rwandan society. It focused on peace-building, trauma healing, and reconciliation. Friends Peace House in Kigali became the center for this vital work. The church also actively combats HIV/AIDS, always with a focus on gender equality. The Rwandan Yearly Meeting, encompassing Quakers across all five provinces, numbers around 5,000 members. Friends Church embodies the Quaker testimonies, values like simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality. These values guide their actions and shape their approach to social issues. The church’s commitment to education is evident in its network of schools. These schools strive to create a harmonious environment for students from diverse backgrounds. They promote understanding and respect between different groups. Friends Church is not merely a place of worship. It is a force for positive change in Rwanda, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
