Beneath the gaze of Bernal Hill lies Precita Park. It’s a tranquil oasis amidst the urban hustle of San Francisco. Precita Park isn’t just a patch of green. It holds a fascinating history intertwined with the now-vanished Precita Creek. Imagine a small village nestled in this very spot back in the 1860s. The lifeblood of this community was Precita Creek, providing water for daily life. Unfortunately, it also served as an open sewer. The creek’s journey began near present-day Market and 24th Streets. It meandered along what is now Precita Avenue, eventually joining Islais Creek. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, progress demanded change. Precita Creek was paved over, becoming part of Army Street, later renamed Cesar Chavez Street. Today, Precita Park stands as a testament to this vanished waterway. The park, spanning 2.06 acres, officially opened in 1894 as Bernal Park. It’s bordered by Folsom Street, Precita Avenue, and Alabama Street. This vibrant green space is more than just grass and trees. It’s a gathering place, a picnic spot, and even a venue for Bernal’s Outdoor Cinema. Precita Park offers a unique blend of history, community, and natural beauty, right in the heart of Bernal Heights.
