Beneath the bustling streets of San Francisco, a hidden waterway whispers tales of a bygone era. Precita Creek, now concealed beneath the pavement, once flowed freely from the slopes near Market and 24th Street down to the Islais Creek estuary. Imagine the gentle murmur of its waters as it carved its path through the Bernal Heights and Mission District neighborhoods. Precita Creek, a name derived from the Spanish word for “dam” or “weir,” reflects its early importance to the native inhabitants who used weirs to catch fish. By the 1860s, a small village thrived alongside the creek in what is now Precita Park. The community relied on the creek for water, but also, unfortunately, used it as an open sewer. This idyllic coexistence wouldn’t last. As San Francisco rapidly expanded, the need for modern infrastructure grew. Between the 1880s and 1900s, Precita Creek met its fate. It was paved over, its course now mirrored by Precita Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street. The creek’s journey ended where Cesar Chavez Street meets Evans Avenue, merging with the Islais Creek estuary. Though now hidden, remnants of Precita Creek’s presence linger. The peculiar bend in Precita Avenue, for example, echoes the creek’s original meandering path. This subtle curve serves as a quiet reminder of the natural waterway that once shaped this landscape. Today, as you walk along Precita Avenue or through Precita Park, take a moment to imagine the creek flowing beneath your feet, a silent testament to San Francisco’s ever-evolving history.
