Built in 1767 Preciosa Sangre de Cristo stands proudly. This church the oldest in the northern valley is a testament to faith. Its shell-shaped niches adorn the facade. Two Solomonic columns flank the striking entrance.
Inside the temple a masterpiece awaits. The Holy Christ of the Precious Blood on the main altar is a Baroque marvel. Another altarpiece displays painted images on the left. Sebastián de Ponte’s paintings grace the altarpiece on the right.
Preciosa Sangre de Cristo is more than just a church. It’s the heart of Cuautepec Barrio Alto. Before the early 20th century it stood almost alone. This Sierra de Guadalupe valley was hard to reach. Few people lived here until recently. The Mexican Revolution divided the original Cuautepec into Barrio Bajo and Barrio Alto.
Today the entire valley is known as Cuautepec. Officially it is Cuautepec de Madero. It was only truly evangelized in the 1760s. The Preciosa Sangre Church is a product of those early missionary efforts.
