Is this some kind of modern art? The Prairie Boat Sculpture. An unusual name for an unusual piece of art. The Prairie Boat Sculpture isn’t your typical statue. It’s a gathering space, a place for the community to come together and connect with nature. You see, the Prairie Boat Sculpture was inspired by two things: the African American Heritage Water Trail and the native prairie landscapes of this area. It’s like a boat sailing on a sea of prairie grass. Several artists from the local community came together to create this piece. The design itself was chosen by a special committee put together by the Field Museum. Imagine that, a museum helping to choose art for the community. They unveiled the Prairie Boat Sculpture just recently, in June 2023. It’s already become a beloved spot in Beaubien Woods. And why not? It’s a celebration of nature, heritage, and community all in one.
