Gazing across the tranquil waters, can you envision a time before ferries dominated Guanabara Bay? Praia das Flechas whispers tales of a simpler era. Long before the roar of engines and bustling crowds, indigenous canoes gracefully navigated these very waters. As early as the 17th century, small sailboats and rowboats, known as faluas, plied the bay. They carried goods and people between settlements, often destined for Rio de Janeiro. Praia das Flechas, along with Itapuca and Icaraí, was a vital link in this maritime network. By 1779, dozens of lanchas and saveiros regularly traveled between these shores and the colonial capital. Imagine the scene: small boats laden with produce, navigating the calm waters towards the bustling port. These early “ports” included Mata-Porcos (Icaraí), Maruí, and Barreto, their names echoing a time long past. Praia das Flechas bore witness to the birth of steam navigation in the bay. In 1817, the royal government granted the first permits for this new technology. The area’s importance grew further in 1819 when Praia Grande, just a stone’s throw from Praia das Flechas, became Vila Real. The “Rua Direita da Conceição,” leading to the Porto das Faluas, transformed into a bustling commercial hub. This solidified the maritime connection between Praia Grande and Rio de Janeiro, a precursor to the ferry system we know today. Praia das Flechas holds the memory of those early days. It whispers of a time before bridges and ferries, when the rhythm of the waves and the creak of wooden hulls were the soundtrack of Guanabara Bay.
