“Psst, want to know a secret?” I say. Prahran Market is more than just a place to buy groceries. It’s a living, breathing piece of Melbourne’s history.

Prahran Market began in 1864. The Prahran Council purchased land near Greville and Grattan Street. Farmers needed a central place to sell produce. The first Prahran Market was born in 1867.

By 1881, the market became too crowded. It moved to its current Commercial Road location. New market buildings opened in 1891. The Commercial Road facade still looks much as it did then.

In the 1930s, the Prahran Market became a distribution point. It provided groceries, clothing and boots to the unemployed. During World War II, women and children ran the stalls. Their husbands and fathers were fighting. The men on the farms would help the women at the Market by delivering the produce.

Boxing Day 1950 was a sad day. A fire destroyed the fruit and vegetable section. A temporary structure was built, but it wasn’t until 1976 that the Prahran Market was fully redeveloped. The redevelopment cost $6.5 million.

Prahran Market saw many changes in the 1960s. Melbourne’s migrant population exploded. Shoppers requested produce from their homelands. Claringbold’s started adding new seafood. Pino’s Fine Produce began importing vegetables.

The Prahran Market was renovated in the 1970s. A new meat, fish and poultry hall was created. Fusion cuisine arrived in the 1980s. Savvy traders specialized in gourmet foods. New chefs visited the Prahran Market for rare ingredients.

An independent board began running the Prahran Market in 1994. The old liquor arcade became a gourmet food hall. By the late 1990s, the market was a gastronomic focal point.

Today, the Prahran Market is known as a foodie hub. Chefs, writers, and restaurateurs shop here. There are cooking demonstrations and workshops. The meat hall was renamed the Bracher Arcade after a long-time trader died.

Prahran Market offers a diverse shopping experience. You can find 12 varieties of mushrooms at Damian Pike’s. There are 40 types of charcuterie at Pete n Rosie’s Deli. The Cheese Shop Deli offers 180 French and Australian cheeses. Naheda’s Choice has 120 dips. Jasper’s Coffee offers over 40 varieties of coffee.

Prahran Market has many healthy options. It offers Melbourne’s largest selection of organic produce. Vegans and paleo enthusiasts can find something here.

The Elizabeth Street Multi-Level Car Park offers affordable parking. During peak times, the top level is easiest to access. Tram route 72 stops right outside.

Chat with the Prahran Market traders about seasonal produce. They can give you recipe ideas. Need tips on cooking meat or choosing flowers? Just ask. Some greengrocers offer a carry-out service to your car.

Experience live music on weekends at the Prahran Market. Enjoy oysters and Japanese food.

Prahran Market isn’t just a market. It’s a place where food, culture, and history come together. It’s a place where you can taste Melbourne’s past and savor its present.
