Ever noticed how this square seems to bridge two worlds? That is Praça do Lido. It sits snugly between Leme and Copacabana. Some even see it as its own little neighborhood.

Praça do Lido was once called Praça Vinte e Seis de Janeiro. Its official name is now Praça Bernadelli. But most locals still call it Praça do Lido. Lido also refers to the area from Princesa Isabel to the Copacabana Palace.

This square has a fascinating history. Back in the day, there was a famous restaurant here. It was named after a beach in Venice. The restaurant was the heart of Copacabana’s chic scene in the 40s and 50s. Imagine elegant dinners and dancing to live orchestras. The restaurant closed in 1957. Yet, the name Lido stuck.

Henrique Bernadelli was a celebrated painter. He lived from 1857 to 1936. Bernadelli studied in Rome for many years. His art reflected the Italian style. He and his brother Rodolfo had a beautiful mansion. It stood where the praça is today. A bronze bust of the brothers stands in the square. It honors their contribution.

In 1922, during the Centennial Independence celebrations the Balneário Lido was built. It included a restaurant, a first-aid post, a garden and even a skating rink.

In 1928, the restaurant Lido was replaced by a Norman pavilion. It became an elegant spot for dining and dancing. Orquestra Colman provided the music.

Today, Praça do Lido is home to the Escola Municipal Roma. It is one of two schools in Copacabana. Its students enjoy stunning views of Avenida Atlântica.

You can find a vibrant street fair here on Saturdays and Sundays. It is called Feirarte. It runs from 10 am to 10 pm. Another fair takes place on Thursdays.

Praça do Lido offers a unique gateway to Christ the Redeemer. Since 2013, vans have been departing from here. They take visitors to the iconic statue on Corcovado. The ride and entrance fee cost around R$50.

Though the old restaurant is gone, the area retains its charm. You can still find great food nearby. Churrascaria Carretão offers classic Brazilian barbecue. Amir serves delicious Arabic cuisine.

While the praça may have lost some of its old glamour. It remains a vital part of Copacabana. It is a place where locals and tourists meet. It is a place where history and modern life intertwine. So take a moment to soak in the atmosphere. Feel the spirit of Praça do Lido.
