Imagine a dark abyss. It is a silent witness to a tragic past. This is Pozzo 1° di Basovizza.
Pozzo 1° di Basovizza is a somber memorial. It stands as a reminder of the violence of 1943-1945. This place echoes with the pain of thousands of Italians.
Originally, Pozzo 1° di Basovizza was a mine. It was dug in the early 20th century. Miners sought a vein of coal. But the mine proved unproductive. It was soon abandoned.
In May 1945, Pozzo 1° di Basovizza became a site of horror. Communist partisans of Tito carried out summary executions here. Their victims were Italian. They came from all walks of life. Civilians died here. So did military personnel. Carabinieri and financiers were murdered. Prison guards and police agents met their end here too. Fascists and anti-fascists alike were thrown into the abyss. Even members of the National Liberation Committee perished here.
Victims were taken from their homes in Trieste. A strict curfew was in place. The condemned were transported to Basovizza in death carts. Their hands were bound with wire. Often they were chained together. They were forced towards the edge of the pit. A burst of gunfire sent the first victims tumbling. They dragged the others down with them.
The fall was 200 meters. Some died instantly. Others suffered. They lay wounded among the rocks. Many victims were stripped and abused before their deaths.
Today, Pozzo 1° di Basovizza is a national monument. It was declared as such in 1992. It is the main memorial for families of the victims. They died in the foibe and in Yugoslav concentration camps. Associations of Italian exiles gather here. They came from Istria, Fiume, and Dalmatia. They remember those lost to violence.
The Day of Remembrance is a national holiday. It is celebrated every February 10th. It preserves the memory of the tragedy. It commemorates Italians and all victims of the foibe. It remembers the exodus of Istrians, Fiumans, and Dalmatians. This is to recall the complex history of the eastern border.
In 2007, the Sacrario was renovated. A Documentation Center was added in 2008. The Lega Nazionale manages it. They work with the Municipality of Trieste.
Sadly, Pozzo 1° di Basovizza has been vandalized. In 2024 and again recently, hateful graffiti appeared. Slogans like “Death to fascism, freedom to the people” were painted. “Trieste is ours” also appeared. Some tried to minimize the horror. They wrote “It’s a well”. These acts only deepen the historical wound.
Despite the vandalism, Pozzo 1° di Basovizza remains a place of solemn remembrance. It is a place to reflect on the past. It stands as a warning against hatred and intolerance.
The small pit is surrounded by a pine forest. Its bottom is littered with rubbish. But it is more than just a hole in the ground. It is a symbol of suffering. It is a reminder of the importance of peace and reconciliation.
Let us remember the victims of Pozzo 1° di Basovizza. Let us learn from the past. May such tragedies never happen again.
