Perhaps the walls could talk, this one would boom. This is Pozvizd. It stands tall as a testament to Dubrovnik’s resilience. Pozvizd watches over the city. It has done so for centuries.

Pozvizd is a key part of Dubrovnik’s defense system. The city walls run almost 2 kilometers. They encircle the city. These walls are 4 to 6 metres thick on the landward side. They are thinner on the seaward side. Pozvizd is one of the towers guarding Dubrovnik. These towers protect the vulnerable city.

Dubrovnik’s history stretches back to the 7th century. Refugees from Epidaurum founded the city. They called it Ragusa. The city grew under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. Later, Venice ruled Dubrovnik. But Dubrovnik always sought independence.

Between the 14th and 19th centuries, Dubrovnik was a free state. It rivalled Venice as a maritime power. The city thrived on trade and diplomacy. Dubrovnik even abolished the slave trade in 1418.

The city was no stranger to disaster. A devastating earthquake struck in 1667. It killed over 5,000 citizens. Many buildings were destroyed. But the city rebuilt itself. It continued to prosper.

In 1806, Napoleon’s forces occupied Dubrovnik. The Republic was abolished in 1808. Dubrovnik was incorporated into the French Empire. But the people of Dubrovnik rose up against the French. They fought for their freedom.

After Napoleon’s defeat, Dubrovnik became part of the Austrian Empire. Later, it joined Yugoslavia. In 1991, Croatia declared independence. Dubrovnik was besieged by the Yugoslav People’s Army. The city suffered significant damage. But it survived.

Today, Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a popular tourist destination. People come from all over the world to see its beauty. They admire its architecture. They learn about its history.

Dubrovnik is often called the Pearl of the Adriatic. Its old town is remarkably well-preserved. The city walls are a major attraction. They offer stunning views of the city and the sea.

Inside the city walls, you’ll find many historic buildings. The Sponza Palace dates from the 16th century. It now houses the National Archives. The Rector’s Palace is a Gothic-Renaissance structure. It displays finely carved details.

The Franciscan monastery has a library with 30,000 volumes. The city’s cathedral houses relics of Saint Blaise. He is Dubrovnik’s patron saint.

Dubrovnik’s main street is called Stradun. It is lined with late-Renaissance houses. Two 14th-century convents stand at opposite ends of the city. The Big Onofrio’s Fountain was built in 1438. It features sixteen mascarons spouting water.
