Pozvizd is a key part of Dubrovnik’s defense system. The city walls run almost 2 kilometers. They encircle the city. These walls are 4 to 6 metres thick on the landward side. They are thinner on the seaward side. Pozvizd is one of the towers guarding Dubrovnik. These towers protect the vulnerable city.

Dubrovnik’s history stretches back to the 7th century. Refugees from Epidaurum founded the city. They called it Ragusa. The city grew under the protection of the Byzantine Empire. Later, Venice ruled Dubrovnik. But Dubrovnik always sought independence.

Between the 14th and 19th centuries, Dubrovnik was a free state. It rivalled Venice as a maritime power. The city thrived on trade and diplomacy. Dubrovnik even abolished the slave trade in 1418.

In 1806, Napoleon’s forces occupied Dubrovnik. The Republic was abolished in 1808. Dubrovnik was incorporated into the French Empire. But the people of Dubrovnik rose up against the French. They fought for their freedom.

After Napoleon’s defeat, Dubrovnik became part of the Austrian Empire. Later, it joined Yugoslavia. In 1991, Croatia declared independence. Dubrovnik was besieged by the Yugoslav People’s Army. The city suffered significant damage. But it survived.
