Beneath the bustling streets of Iztapalapa, a hidden giant slumbers. This is Pozo Santa Catarina 3A, a marvel of modern engineering. Pozo Santa Catarina 3A isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a 2,000-meter-deep well, a lifeline for the thirsty eastern reaches of Iztapalapa. Completed in late July 2017, Pozo Santa Catarina 3A represents a new chapter in Mexico City’s water story. It delves far deeper than the typical 500-600 meter wells of the city, reaching a depth comparable to the deepest wells worldwide. This depth taps into a different geological stratum, providing water of a higher quality, almost potable. This water, a surprising 60 degrees Celsius, hints at a different aquifer. Pozo Santa Catarina 3A pumps out a significant 110-120 liters of water per second. This is up to three times the output of other wells in the area. The impact is substantial, offering daily water access to 44,000 people and providing intermittent service to an additional 220,000 in areas like Sierra de Santa Catarina, Ermita-Zaragoza, and Paraje San Juan. Pozo Santa Catarina 3A is a testament to collaboration. It was born from a joint effort by Pemex, Mexico City’s water system (SACMEX), the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), and the UNAM Institute of Geology. This collaboration also includes plans for another deep well, Pozo del Cerro de la Estrella, slated for construction. Pozo Santa Catarina 3A signifies more than just water access. It’s a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and the pursuit of solutions for a city grappling with water challenges. It’s a story of digging deep, not just into the earth, but into the potential of science and human ingenuity. So, next time you’re in Iztapalapa, remember the silent giant beneath your feet. Remember Pozo Santa Catarina 3A, a well of hope for a thirsty city.
