Tucked away near the roar of Heathrow’s runways, lies a place with a story to tell. Poyle Estate. You might not expect a quiet estate like this to be so close to such a busy airport. But Poyle Estate has a secret. It remembers a time before the roar of jets, a time when the only sounds were the puff of steam engines and the clatter of carriages. You see, Poyle Estate was once graced by not one, but two railway stations: Poyle Halt and Poyle Estate Halt. These stations were part of the Staines & West Drayton Railway, a lifeline connecting this area to the wider world. Imagine the hustle and bustle as passengers, perhaps on their way to London or Windsor, disembarked at Poyle Estate Halt. The year is 1954 and the station is new, its platforms bustling with activity. Poyle Estate Halt, a symbol of progress in an era when railways were king. Sadly, the romance of the railway was not to last. In 1965, after just over a decade of service, Poyle Estate Halt fell silent, its tracks eventually disappearing under the relentless march of progress and the construction of the M25 motorway. Today, only fragmented memories and perhaps a few ghostly whispers of steam remain.
