What’s in a name? At Poul Henningsens Plads, the name tells a story. This square, right here at the intersection of Østerbrogade, Jagtvej, and Strandboulevarden, isn’t just a place to pass through. It’s a tribute to a man who shaped Danish culture. Poul Henningsens Plads earned its name in 1994, honoring the architect and cultural figure, Poul Henningsen. He wasn’t just an architect. He was a writer, a critic, and a designer. Most famously, he was known for his iconic lamps. The square itself is a relatively recent addition to Copenhagen’s urban landscape. Interestingly, when the Copenhagen Metro’s City Circle Line was being planned, a station was initially intended for right here, under Poul Henningsens Plads. The working title for this station? “Ved Poul Henningsens Plads,” meaning “At Poul Henningsen’s Square”. However, the plans changed. The station was ultimately built a short distance away, on the other side of Jagtvej, at an unnamed square at the corner of Tåsingegade and Reersøgade. Despite the move, the station retained the name “Poul Henningsens Plads Station”. So, while you won’t find a metro entrance directly on the square, the name still resonates with the nearby station. It’s a reminder of the initial plans and a continued tribute to Poul Henningsen’s influence on the city.
