Poukaraka Flats offers much more than just a place to pitch a tent. This campground boasts a rich history. It’s located in a regional park established in 1994. Officially opened in 2007 the park now provides visitors with access to stunning natural beauty. The park is home to a quiet child-friendly beach called Whakanewha Bay.

Imagine yourself waking up to the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore. The air is fresh and clean. You can smell the salty tang of the sea and the sweet fragrance of native plants. You’re surrounded by native birds. Kereru Tui Fantail Silvereye and Grey Warbler are just a few of the species that call this place home. Keep an eye out for Shining Cuckoo Harriers Morepork and even the occasional Red Crowned Parakeet. If you’re lucky you may spot wetland birds like Banded Rail and Spotless Crake. The coastal birds are just as diverse. White-faced Heron Paradise Shelduck Grey Duck South Island Pied Oystercatchers and many more grace this picturesque bay.

Poukaraka Flats is more than just birdwatching. The campground has amenities. There is a communal gas BBQ flush toilets cold showers and potable water. However remember no rubbish bins are available. Please pack out everything you pack in. Fires and pets are strictly prohibited. The maximum stay is seven nights. Bookings can be made up to six months in advance.

For self-contained campervans there’s a designated parking area. This allows for a one-night stay for a maximum of five vehicles. It is important to note though that no water or toilet facilities are available for self-contained campers.
