How often do you think about the name Pote de Água 2-M? This unassuming spot carries a history far deeper than its simple designation as a survey point suggests. Pote de Água 2-M links to Lisbon’s crucial water infrastructure. It connects to a tale of royal ambition and engineering innovation.

The name Pote de Água refers to a spring. The Quinta do Pote de Água, or the Estate of the Water Pot, once stood here. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed it. The name, however, endured. It reappeared in the 1960s, first as Largo do Pote de Água. Later, it became Travessa do Pote de Água.

To truly appreciate Pote de Água 2-M, you have to understand Lisbon’s historical struggle for water. The Tagus River was too salty. The city needed a reliable source of fresh water. King John V decided to solve this problem. He initiated the building of the Águas Livres Aqueduct. This massive project would bring water from Caneças to Lisbon. Taxes on essential goods funded its construction.

Construction began in 1731. Italian architect António Canevari initially led the project. Later, Portuguese architects and engineers took over. Manuel da Maia and Custódio Vieira were among them. Vieira conceived the aqueduct’s centerpiece. These are the arches over the Alcântara valley. Completed in 1744, they span 941 meters. The tallest arches reach 65 meters.

Imagine the scene in 1748. The aqueduct finally brought water to Lisbon. The city celebrated. A commemorative arch was built in Amoreiras. The aqueduct fed a network of fountains. This greatly improved the lives of Lisbon’s residents.

The Águas Livres Aqueduct remained intact. It was a symbol of resilience. The aqueduct supplied Lisbon with water until 1967. Today, you can still visit parts of the aqueduct. You can start at the Water Museum in Campolide.

Pote de Água 2-M reminds us of this history. It’s a small point. But it’s connected to a vital artery. It ensured Lisbon’s survival and growth. The memory of the Quinta do Pote de Água is also sustained.

So, next time you see Pote de Água 2-M, remember its broader story. It is about water. It is about engineering. It is about Lisbon’s history. It echoes the resourcefulness that shaped the city we see today.
