“Houses in bad condition” is a possible origin of Es Caülls name. This possessió in Marratxí did not have its own history until the 19th century. Before 1800 it was part of the large possessió of Son Sales. Son Sales was an important livestock center. Es Caülls served as a place to gather sheep, goats and pigs. In 1764 there is a reference to the toponym and its use in an inventory of Son Sales. It says “more than three thousand sheep in los Caülls”.
The hydraulic system of this agricultural unit was important. It included the Caülls spring, irrigation canal, waterwheel, washhouse and hydraulic flour mill. Several lawsuits between the Salas and Verí families led to the division of Son Sales. It was divided between the heirs of Joan Fuster de Sales i de Berga and Antoni Fuster de Sales i de Togores. Half of the land went to the Verí family. For some years it was known as Son Sales Nou. Later the old toponym Es Caülls was regularized.
Currently the possessió belongs to the Cotoner family. They hold the Marquisate of Mondéjar. The family resides in Madrid. Es Caülls is crossed by the Inca highway. It borders the housing developments. These arose from its own segregation. Es Caülls has houses in very poor condition. It has a wine cellar and sheepfolds.
In 1801 after the division the new possessió bordered the Palma-Inca road. To the north it bordered Son Sureda. This belonged to the Marquis de Vivot. To the west it bordered the other half of Son Sales. To the south it bordered Son Guillem and la Cabana.
In 1802 the owner Tomàs de Verí i Togores leased Es Caülls to Francesc Batle. It was a contract for eight years at 3000 pounds per year. There was no wine cellar no oil mill no cistern yet. For some years works were carried out under the direction of Tomàs Abrines. He was a master builder of royal works of Ciutat. The house of the manager was enlarged. The stable area was improved. A vat was built. Also they built a winery with a house on top. A house was built to collect the women who harvested olives. A straw shed a porch to cover the oven a cistern and an era were added. Vineyards fig trees and poplars were planted. Later a second vat was built. Also the oil mill another cistern and the cistern in the center of the clastra were built.
In 1870 the bridge that crosses Coanegra was rebuilt. The shields of the Verí and Salas houses were placed there in 1884. In 1811 it had 260 quarterades of sowing land. It had houses and was dedicated to olive groves carob trees vineyards and the cultivation of cereals and legumes. It had an orchard with fruit trees and alfalfa and vegetable crops. There were areas of rotations.
The Camp d’Inca the Sementer de ses Trempes and can Mascarell belonged to it. Also es sementer des Polls can Lluc and sa Cabana. It was a place for raising horses. It had 22 mules seven mares and seven donkeys. There were guards of 125 sheep and six pigs. It made an annual income of 4500 pounds. Also eight wineskins of oil and a pig.
In 1816 Miquel Serra was the tenant. Eight people lived there. In 1818 the possessió had 500 quarterades of olive groves. This was within an extension of 900 quarterades. In 1851 it was owned by Pere de Verí i Sales. It made an annual income of 48724 pounds. In the 1950s the oil mill was taken to make a chalet. This disfigured the main group of old buildings. Today the old part is in very poor condition. The wine cellar has become the most characteristic construction of the possessió. It has six groin vaults supported by semicircular arches with fine molded capitals. Also the kitchen of the owner’s house and the cistern are highlights.
Until the 1960s a dozen people worked there. They were managers messengers shepherds and pig keepers. In addition to livestock they grew carob almonds and many cereals. They made oil. The bridge of Es Caülls was rebuilt in the 19th century. It improved communication between Es Caülls and Son Sales. The bridge has two shields. The one on the left corresponds to the Verí family. The one on the right to the Sales family. In the center there is a crucifix with the four arms. It has a fleur-de-lis. Below the cross is the date 1884. Since 2006 the Es Caülls bridge can only be crossed on foot. The Coanegra stream begins at the Freu jump in Orient. It extends through the Coanegra valley. The stream is an interesting place for its flora and fauna.
