But the story of ESIME begins long before this campus was built. The school’s roots trace back to 1856. President Ignacio Comonfort created the Escuela de Artes y Oficios para Hombres. This school faced challenges and closed two years later. In 1864 Benito Juárez ordered the creation of the Escuela Nacional de Artes y Oficios para Hombres. This was interrupted by the Second Mexican Empire.
The school reopened in 1876. It was housed in the ex-convent of San Lorenzo. The location was on Allende and Belisario Domínguez streets. The school changed names several times. It became EPIME in 1916. Then it was EIME in 1921. In 1932 it became ESME by mistake. Soon after it adopted the name it still uses today ESIME.
In 1936 ESIME began independently teaching engineering. This included electrical and mechanical engineering. It also started offering aeronautical and communications engineering. ESIME helped found the Instituto Politécnico Nacional IPN in 1936.
ESIME has several campuses today. These are in Azcapotzalco Culhuacán Ticomán and Zacatenco. Each offers different engineering programs. Here at Azcapotzalco you can study mechanical or robotics engineering. You can also study automotive systems.
