Who guards the guardians? At Pos Hansip in Jakarta, that age-old question takes on a new meaning. This seemingly humble structure, a small security post, holds a significant piece of Indonesian history. Pos Hansip, meaning “Guard Post,” isn’t just a place. It represents a vital part of Indonesia’s security system. The history of Pos Hansip, and its predecessor organizations, stretches back surprisingly far. Did you know the first post office in Batavia, now Jakarta, played a crucial role in the development of what would become the Pos Hansip system? Established in 1746 by Governor-General G.W. Baron van Imhoff, the post office was meant to secure citizens’ letters. This initial focus on communication and security laid the groundwork for the future network of guard posts. Over time, this network expanded. Four years after the Jakarta post office opened, another one was established in Semarang. The route between these two cities, passing through Karawang, Cirebon, and Pekalongan, became a crucial artery for information and trade. This connection highlights the growing need for security and local vigilance. The very idea of a widespread, community-based security system began to take root. That seed would eventually blossom into the Pos Hansip we see today. The Pos Hansip system we know evolved from colonial-era organizations like the LBD (Lucht Bescherming Dienst or Air Protection Service). Established in 1939 by the Dutch, the LBD’s purpose was to protect civilians from air raids. During the Japanese occupation, the LBD was transformed into a civil defense organization. This organization became a key element in Indonesia’s defense strategy. After independence, it continued to evolve, eventually becoming the Pertahanan Sipil (Civil Defense) and later, Linmas (Perlindungan Masyarakat or Community Protection). Although Pos Hansip may appear unassuming, it symbolizes the enduring importance of community involvement in safety and security. The posts serve as a constant reminder of Indonesia’s rich history. They also reflect the ongoing commitment to maintaining peace and order.
