Is there a more vibrant spirit than that of Portuguesa? Here in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Associação Atlética Portuguesa, affectionately known as Portuguesa Carioca, Portuguesa Rio, Portuguesa da Ilha, or simply Lusa, pulses with life. This isn’t just a football club. It’s a story woven into the fabric of Rio. Portuguesa was born from a shared love of football and a deep connection to Portugal. In 1924, Constantino Paiva and Joaquim Martins Leal, businessmen in Rio, returned from a trip to Portugal inspired by a match between Portuguesa Santista and local Santos employees. They rallied fellow businessmen in Rio, and on December 17, 1924, Associação Atlética Portuguesa was officially founded. Their first headquarters, located on Rua Visconde de Itaúna, sadly vanished in the 1940s with the construction of Avenida Presidente Vargas. The club found a new home on Ilha do Governador, at Rua Haroldo Lobo. This location had a unique history. It was formerly a jockey stadium, which eventually went bankrupt. This paved the way for Portuguesa to take over, transforming it into the iconic Estádio Luso Brasileiro. This stadium, with a capacity of almost 6,000, has hosted some of Rio’s most memorable matches, becoming a crucial part of the city’s football scene. Portuguesa joined Rio de Janeiro’s first professional league just three years after its founding, in 1927. The club enjoyed success in championships throughout the 1930s. In more recent times, Portuguesa won the Rio Cup in 2000 and again in 2016, showcasing their enduring competitive spirit. Their journey hasn’t been without its challenges, including stints in Série C and D. Yet, Portuguesa consistently rises to the occasion. Their mascot, the zebra, embodies this resilience and unique identity.
