In 1952, a vision took root. The burgeoning metropolis of Bloomington, Minnesota, needed a spiritual anchor, a beacon of hope. This need led to the founding of Portland Avenue United Methodist Church, affectionately known as “The Port.” Portland Avenue United Methodist Church officially opened its doors in 1953, holding regular church school and worship services. The church’s legal charter followed on March 14, 1954, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The Port’s mission is clear: “To grow followers of Jesus who change the world.” This mission is supported by their vision: “To be a safe harbor along life’s journey.” The church’s guiding principles, conveniently summarized by the acronym P.O.R.T., emphasize providing a Place of safety, belonging, and acceptance for all; creating Opportunities to love and serve; Radiating God’s love through worship and prayer; and growing Together in faith. Portland Avenue United Methodist Church isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a community hub deeply intertwined with the lives of Bloomington residents. The church actively supports local institutions like Valley View Elementary School and Bloomington Kennedy High School. They extend their support to the Education Foundation of Bloomington and organizations like Cornerstone Shelter, VEAP, and Dignity Center. Their commitment to service goes beyond local boundaries. Through the Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Portland Avenue United Methodist Church participates in special Sunday offerings. These offerings support various ministries across the state and beyond, including Human Relations Day, UMCOR Sunday, Native American Ministry Sunday, Peace with Justice Sunday, World Communion Sunday, and United Methodist Student Day. From its humble beginnings in a rapidly growing suburb to its current status as a pillar of the community, Portland Avenue United Methodist Church has consistently served as a safe harbor. For seventy years, it has offered a place of solace, growth, and community. It’s a testament to the vision of those early founders who saw the need for a spiritual home in Bloomington and worked to make it a reality.
