Beneath our feet, history echoes. The Porte de Sèvres stands as more than just a gateway. It is a marker of time. This location in the 15th arrondissement has seen Paris transform.

The Porte de Sèvres, one of Paris’s gates, sits 500 meters west of the Porte d’Issy. It also lies 750 meters east of the Porte du Bas-Meudon. Historically, it was on Boulevard Victor. It was at the junction of Rue Balard and Avenue Félix-Faure. The construction of the Boulevard Périphérique led to its relocation. Now, it extends from Avenue de la Porte-de-Sèvres. It reaches the Paris heliport near Issy-les-Moulineaux.

Interestingly, the Porte de Sèvres serves as an entrance to Îlot Frères-Voisins. This area belongs to Paris but lies outside the traditional city walls.

For transport, the Porte de Sèvres offers access to the Périphérique ring road. The tramway line 2 stops at Suzanne Lenglen station. Metro line 8 and tramway 3a are also nearby at Balard station.

In the mid-19th century, the Porte de Sèvres was part of the Thiers wall. This wall aimed to protect Paris. It acted as one of the city’s access points from its 1860 layout.

Today, the area around the Porte de Sèvres is primarily filled with offices and administrations. It is nestled between the Petite Ceinture railway line and the Paris – Issy-les-Moulineaux heliport. Also nearby are the Hexagone Balard and the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital. You will also find Aquaboulevard and the Suzanne-Lenglen sports park close to the Porte de Sèvres.

A significant change occurred in 2015. The Ministry of Defense centralized its services here. All headquarters for land, air, and sea forces moved to this area. Previously, they were spread across ten different sites in Paris. The consolidation resulted in the occupation of 300,000 square meters of space. These sites were formerly occupied by the Air Force headquarters. There was also airbase 117 and the naval construction technical service. A footbridge spans Avenue de la Porte-de-Sèvres, connecting the two parcels.

Now, consider a ceramic fresco. It is near the church gardens of Saint Germain des Prés. This is a remnant from the World’s Fair in 1900. This “Porte de Sèvres” marked an entrance to the French Manufactures pavilion. The pavilion was at Place des Invalides. Risier designed it. It replicated a high relief by Jules Coutan. It showcased the Sèvres manufactory. Sèvres was famous for its high-quality ceramics. After the exhibition, they saved it from destruction. Then, they moved it to its current location.

So, as we stand here at the Porte de Sèvres, remember its layers of history. It has evolved from a defensive gate to a modern hub. It connects different parts of Paris. It even houses national institutions. The Porte de Sèvres continues to play a vital role in the city’s story.
