Gazing across the sparkling waters of Port Phillip Bay, can you sense the echoes of Portarlington’s vibrant past? Portarlington, a charming coastal town on the Bellarine Peninsula, has a rich history intertwined with Aboriginal heritage, European exploration, and the rise and fall of industries. Portarlington, originally home to the Wathaurung people, still whispers their story through the ancient shell middens along the cliffs. These middens, dominated by mussel shells, reveal the vital role these shellfish played in the Wathaurung diet. Imagine Matthew Flinders, in 1802, camping just a short distance from Portarlington, at Indented Head. Picture him trading with the local Aboriginal people, charting this new land. Years later, in 1835, John Batman arrived, praising the Bellarine Hills’ potential for grazing, setting the stage for the town’s European settlement. Portarlington, initially named Drayton, officially became Portarlington in 1851. The town was carefully planned, with wide streets lined with elms and pines, reflecting a vision of prosperity. The town grew alongside its industries. A flour mill, built in 1857, thrived, especially after a rival mill in Drysdale burned down. Later, a brickworks, established in 1870, utilized the high-quality local clay, even exporting to Geelong and Melbourne. Portarlington became a bustling port, with the pier, constructed in 1859, welcoming steamers laden with goods and passengers. The town’s link to Melbourne via these steamers further fueled its growth. Produce flowed from Portarlington to Melbourne, while essential supplies returned, solidifying the town’s importance. Portarlington’s charm also drew holidaymakers. The sandy beaches and picturesque setting offered a welcome escape, and the regular steamer service cemented its reputation as a seaside resort. Today, Portarlington continues to evolve. It’s a popular destination for retirees and holidaymakers, carrying its history into a vibrant present. As you stroll along the foreshore, can you still hear the clatter of carts carrying produce to the pier? Can you feel the excitement of holidaymakers disembarking the steamers? Portarlington, a town steeped in history, continues to welcome visitors to its shores, sharing its unique story.
