Ever feel the urge to connect with someone far away? The Portal Sculpture here in Bremerhaven offers just that. It’s more than just a statue. It’s a window to another world.
This Portal Sculpture is part of a series of artworks. These sculptures create a live video link between different cities. Imagine standing here and waving to someone in another country.
The idea for the Portal Sculpture began in 2016. Benediktas Gylys had a mystical experience that inspired him. He then partnered with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. Together, they developed the first two Portal Sculptures.
The first Portal Sculptures were placed in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland, on May 26, 2021. Each Portal Sculpture is a large circle. It features a screen and a camera. The camera captures a live stream of the other city. The screen displays that live stream. It’s like looking through a window to another place.
In May 2024, two more Portal Sculptures were installed. These connected New York City and Dublin, Ireland. The Dublin Portal Sculpture was on O’Connell Street. The New York City Portal Sculpture was at Flatiron South Public Plaza.
However, things didn’t go smoothly at first. The Dublin and New York Portal Sculptures were temporarily shut down. This was due to some inappropriate behavior. It seems some people couldn’t resist acting up for the cameras.
The Portal Sculpture in Bremerhaven lets us experience a global connection. It reminds us that we’re all part of a larger community. It shrinks the world. It lets us see and interact with people in distant places.
The Portal Sculpture was designed as a reference to the wheel of time. It symbolizes the continuous flow of life. It is a reminder that we are all connected, no matter how far apart we may be.
The Portal network can only build a maximum of 6 new Portals per year. This ensures dedication to each new location. It also ensures the sustainable expansion of the network.
