Encased in metal, whispers of the gold rush echo at the Portable Iron Houses. Here, on Coventry Street, stand three iron witnesses to Melbourne’s explosive growth. The Portable Iron Houses are not just relics. They are time capsules from a bygone era. They offer a glimpse into the lives of those who flocked to this city, fueled by dreams of fortune. The Portable Iron Houses arrived in pieces, ordered from catalogues like furniture from a modern-day warehouse. Imagine churches capable of holding 700 souls, theaters of amusement, and humble cottages, all constructed of prefabricated iron, shipped across vast oceans. By 1855, South Melbourne boasted nearly 100 of these metal dwellings, a testament to the rapid expansion brought on by the gold rush. Patterson House stands defiantly on its original plot, a survivor amidst the changing cityscape. Its walls, once lined with timber crates due to the scarcity of prepared timber, whisper tales of resourcefulness. Bellhouse House, a unique survivor and possibly the only one of its kind in the world, narrowly escaped demolition. It was rescued and reassembled here, a monument to the ingenuity of Edward Taylor Bellhouse of Manchester. Abercrombie House, the third of the trio, made a journey from North Melbourne, its aging wallpaper a poignant reminder of its past inhabitants, the last of whom resided within its iron walls as recently as 1976. These Portable Iron Houses, stark in their simplicity, stand in contrast to the modern skyline. They serve as a powerful reminder of a time when dreams of gold and a new life were forged in iron and transported across the seas.
