Port Phillip Prison

Locked away amidst the sprawling suburbs of Truganina, stands Port Phillip Prison. It’s a place shrouded in secrecy, a world unseen by most. Port Phillip Prison opened its gates in September 1997. It quickly became Victoria’s largest maximum security prison. It houses over a thousand inmates within its imposing walls. Port Phillip Prison isn’t just a concrete behemoth. It’s a complex network of 13 accommodation units. Each one is designed to manage different categories of offenders. There’s even a youth unit named Penhyn, specifically for young adults aged 18-25. These are first-time offenders with no prior criminal record. This shows an attempt to rehabilitate those who might still have a chance at a different life. Within the walls of Port Phillip Prison, every cell offers basic amenities. These include a shower, toilet, desk, chair, television, and bed. There’s even a 20-bed inpatient hospital unit. This caters to the medical needs of the inmates. Port Phillip Prison has housed some of Australia’s most notorious criminals. Julian Knight, responsible for the 1987 Hoddle Street massacre, served time here. Jason Joseph Roberts, convicted of the Silk-Miller police murders, was also an inmate. Even Paul Denyer, the “Frankston Serial Killer,” spent time at Port Phillip Prison before being transferred. In April 2016, a prison officer resigned. This came after a staggering 100 weapons were seized from his home. This incident highlighted the potential for corruption and the challenges of maintaining security. In a more recent controversy, a 16-year-old boy was held in maximum security for almost four months in 2022. This was against the advice of the sentencing judge. During this time, he was subjected to routine isolation. He was confined to his cell for 23 hours a day. This case raised serious questions about the treatment of young offenders within the prison system. Despite its imposing presence, Port Phillip Prison is slated for closure in December 2025. The prisoners will be relocated to the Western Plains Correctional Centre in Lara. This marks the end of an era for this controversial institution. Its legacy will undoubtedly continue to be debated.
