Was there ever a time when Port Melbourne Uniting Church wasn’t a beacon of faith and community? The answer, my friends, is a resounding yes. Before the church’s foundations were even laid, this very land echoed with a different rhythm, a different way of life. The Yulukit Wilam clan of the Boonwurrung people called this place home. Imagine their camps nestled among the trees, the air filled with the scent of the sea and the sound of their language. Early paintings by Wilbraham Liardet offer us a glimpse into that world – a world of abundant nature, with the river meeting the sea, lagoons teeming with fish, and a landscape cloaked in woodlands. It was on this land, never ceded, that the Port Melbourne Uniting Church took root in 1864. But this church wasn’t always the unified body it is today. Like branches of the same tree, different denominations of Presbyterians coexisted, each with its own interpretations and traditions. The Free Church Presbyterians were the first to establish a foothold here. However, by the time funds were raised for a permanent structure, a union was brewing within the Presbyterian ranks. The arrival of Dr. Donald McDonald, a charismatic figure with a vision of a unified church, spurred this movement forward. And so, the Port Melbourne Uniting Church, born from a desire for unity and strengthened by a shared faith, rose on the ancestral lands of the Boonwurrung people.
