Ever wondered where James Bond foiled a helicopter theft? It happened right here at Port Hercule de Monaco. This isn’t just any marina it is a historic hub of maritime activity.

Port Hercule de Monaco is one of the few deep-water ports on the French Riviera. It has been a vital part of Monaco since ancient times. Greeks and Romans used this natural bay as a trading port. However it was poorly sheltered from easterly winds.

The port we see today was completed in 1926. Prince Albert I extended it at the turn of the 20th century. In the 1970s Prince Rainier III initiated substantial improvements. A semi-floating sea wall was constructed to protect the port from eastern swells. This colossal structure is 352 meters long and weighs 160000 tonnes. It was towed from Gibraltar in 2002. A lee breakwater of 145 meters was added later.

The design is avant-garde. The volume of seawater trapped beneath acts as a fixed water wall. This reduces agitation. The floating structure is anchored on the Rock side. It is moored on the sea side by eight mooring lines. This design preserves marine life.

Port Hercule can accommodate up to 700 vessels. Some docks have a depth of 5 meters. The outer port reaches 40 meters. Harbour pilots are required for vessels longer than 30 meters.

Prince Albert II continued his father’s work. He modernized Port Hercule to make it the most practical marina in the western Mediterranean. The port now welcomes large luxurious yachts. It positions Monaco as a capital of yachting.

The port offers many facilities. There is fresh water and electricity on the quayside. WIFI is available. There are grey water collectors showers and WC. You can find self-service laundry in the city. There are containers for used oil and batteries. Fuel is available at the landing stage.

Two private careening areas and shipyards are located at Port Hercule. Monaco Marine and Monaco Boat Service manage them. These companies have cranes for ship maintenance.

The port is managed by the Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco. The port authority can be reached at +377 97 77 30 00. The port masters monitor VHF Canal 12 around the clock.

Port Hercule is more than a marina. It is a vibrant center. It is lined with restaurants and bars. The boutiques casinos and Michelin-starred restaurants of Monte Carlo are nearby.

In 2011 Jean Michel Jarre performed a free concert here. It celebrated the wedding of Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock. Port Hercule also hosts the Foire de Monaco annually.

So as you stroll along the quays of Port Hercule imagine the history. Think of the yachts and the celebrities. Remember James Bond’s daring chase. This port is a blend of history luxury and innovation. It is a true gem of Monaco.
