Sixty-three years ago Poplar Primary School opened its doors. Poplar Primary School welcomes hundreds of children. It’s a vibrant community hub. Poplar Primary School boasts a large campus. There’s a multi-sports court three other courts a scooter park and even a woodland area. The children also benefit from allotments a large field and a trim trail. Poplar Primary School also has playgrounds for younger children. Even a pirate ship and climbing wall are there for fun. Two Early Years playgrounds complete the picture. Poplar Primary School uses Mostyn Gardens and Old Ruts for sports days and special events. The school prides itself on a nurturing environment. Poplar Primary School’s motto is Ready Respectful and Safe. Mrs Elaine Spick is the head teacher. She leads a dedicated staff team. They work hard to ensure every child succeeds. Poplar Primary School consistently achieves high results. In 2024 they excelled in phonics reading maths and grammar. Their writing scores were above the national average. Poplar Primary School also excels in sports and music. They work with Merton Schools Sports Partnership and Merton Music Foundation. The school won the Refspect Award twice for demonstrating respect. Year 6 pupils participated in the Junior Citizens programme winning both the Behaviour and Engagement Awards. Poplar Primary School offers many music opportunities. Mr Igor from MMF and peripatetic teachers teach music. Pupils participated in the Young Voices Concert at the 02. The school holds regular concerts for parents. They have weekly singing assemblies and celebrate Musician of the Month. Poplar Primary School offers many enriching school trips. Year 5 goes on a residential trip to Ironbridge. Year 6 goes camping in the Ashdown Forest. Poplar Primary School is a National Trust link school. They use Morden Hall Park for learning experiences. Children at Poplar Primary School have various roles. They can be Eco-Reps School Council Members House Captains Reading Champions or Digital Leaders. They tend the allotments and are members of the Merton Pupil Parliament. Poplar Primary School provides extensive support. They have Learning Mentors a School Counsellor ELSAs a TAMHs support worker a Family Liaison Officer and even a therapy dog called Rocky. Drama therapists are also available.
