Initially, Ilha da Boa Viagem hosted religious activities and military functions. Later, it was granted to the Marine Men’s Protective Association. They planned to build a rescue station here. In the late 1930s a scout group and a school camp were established on this beautiful island.
Ilha da Boa Viagem has also hosted sporting events and tourist activities. Various tours, civic ceremonies, and artistic performances have taken place here. Its structures have been rebuilt several times.
The history of Ilha da Boa Viagem began in 1650. It started with the construction of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. This site became a pilgrimage center for sailors. They gave thanks for successful voyages and sought blessings for future journeys.
The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem led to religious festivals. These events culminated in maritime processions in Guanabara Bay. The chapel was destroyed during the French invasion in 1711. It was rebuilt in 1780 in the neoclassical style.
Besides its religious significance, Ilha da Boa Viagem historically served military purposes. Its prime location overlooking Guanabara Bay made it part of Brazil’s old defense system. Restorations have recovered the island’s buildings including the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem. Also restored were the small fort and the house known as the castle.
Ilha da Boa Viagem is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It offers the best panoramic view of Guanabara Bay. Here you can deeply breathe in the air of nature and history. Ilha da Boa Viagem is open for free visits without prior booking. It operates from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 AM to 5 PM.
