A colossal steel behemoth stands before us. This is the Pont tournant d’Arenc a marvel of 19th-century engineering. It’s not just a bridge it’s a testament to Marseille’s rich maritime history.

Built in 1886 at the Fives-Lille factory the Pont tournant d’Arenc is a masterpiece. The design was overseen by the renowned Marseillais engineer Louis Barret. Sadly he died in 1887 during its construction. This rotating bridge is a unique type of Colbert arch bridge. Its massive 1350-ton riveted steel structure features a unique offset axis on the jetty.

Imagine the scene on January 7 1889. Fourteen heavily laden carts stood on the bridge for hours. A successful test. This proved the bridge’s incredible strength. It was then the largest hydraulically operated swing bridge in the world.

The bridge’s 96-meter-long deck gracefully swings open. This creates a 50-meter-wide channel. Two ships can pass through simultaneously. The mechanical parts were restored in 1970. Its electrical systems were updated in 2003. However since 2010 it has remained in the open position.

The Pont tournant d’Arenc is more than just a bridge. It is part of Marseille’s port infrastructure. It connects the Arenc dock to the outer breakwater. It played a crucial role in the port’s expansion in the 19th century. It allowed for larger ships to access the docks. This helped Marseille’s growth as a major Mediterranean port.

When the Pinède lift bridge was damaged in 2015 the Pont tournant d’Arenc’s importance was highlighted. For a year it temporarily filled the gap. Its insured value is a substantial 18.5 million euros. Yet there are plans to remove it. This is despite its historical and architectural significance. This would be a huge loss for Marseille’s heritage. Its potential relocation to a roundabout is being discussed. The decision remains a point of contention. Preservation versus progress. A battle for Marseille’s past. A struggle for its future. What will become of this magnificent structure? The story of the Pont tournant d’Arenc continues.
