Slipped between Lyon’s 1st and 9th arrondissements, the Pont Maréchal Kœnig stands as a testament to a tumultuous past and a symbol of modern engineering. Have you ever considered how many bridges have graced this very spot over the Saône? The current Pont Maréchal Kœnig, a sleek steel structure completed in 1972, is actually the fourth bridge to bear the weight of Lyon’s history at this crossing. It’s named after Pierre Kœnig, a distinguished military figure and politician who served as Marshal of France and a Companion of the Liberation. The first bridge, a more humble affair known as the Pont de Serin or Pont d’Halincourt, was erected between 1745 and 1749. Commissioned by the Hospices Civils de Lyon, it served the city until its collapse in 1780. A wooden replacement suffered a similar fate, swept away by the Saône’s relentless current just a decade later. In 1811, a sturdier wooden bridge, designed by the engineer Kermengan, took its place. This five-arched structure was eventually updated in 1844 with stone arches, proving more resilient than its predecessors. It even survived World War II with minimal damage. However, the demands of modern river traffic and the ambitious Rhine-Rhone waterway project meant even this robust bridge had to make way for progress. The current Pont Maréchal Kœnig, with its single, elegant steel arch spanning 108 meters, was built just meters upstream from the old Pont de Serin. Its design, featuring a remarkably thin metallic deck assembled from nine separate pieces, maximized navigational clearance while minimizing the need to raise the surrounding quays. Imagine the scene: Mayor Louis Pradel and the navigation engineer stood proudly as the Pont Maréchal Kœnig was opened to the public. Moments later, its predecessor, the Pont de Serin, was dramatically dynamited, a symbolic passing of the torch from the past to the future. The resulting wave in the Saône, ironically, brought to the surface the silent evidence of recent pollution – thousands of dead fish, a sobering reminder of the delicate balance between progress and preservation. So, as you stand here on the Pont Maréchal Kœnig, remember that you’re not just crossing a river, but traversing layers of history, each bridge a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
