Ever heard the tale of a preacher turned neighborhood? That’s essentially the story of Pondok Ranji. This commuter station in South Tangerang has a history stretching back over a century.
Pondok Ranji isn’t just a modern transit hub. It’s a place with roots. The name “Ranji” comes from Kyai Ranji a revered Islamic teacher. He hailed from Cirebon and was a student of Sunan Gunung Jati. Kyai Ranji spread his teachings in Batavia and surrounding areas. Some even called him Haji Pranji or Pangerang Pranji recognizing him as a skilled religious figure and a formidable warrior.
Kyai Ranji established a simple pondok near Kampung Hutan. This modest lodging became a haven for traders traveling to and from Jatinegara Market in Jakarta. They rested there. Some sought Kyai Ranji’s wisdom and religious guidance. The traders frequently referred to the area as “Pemondokan punya Kyai Ranji”. This translates to “the lodging of Kyai Ranji”. Over time the name evolved into Pondok Ranji. This is how the village and eventually the station got its name.
Now standing at Pondok Ranji Station it’s hard to imagine those early days. The station itself is relatively new. It opened in 1990. This was after the tragic Bintaro train crash in 1987. In 2022, Pondok Ranji Station underwent significant renovations. These modernizations improved accessibility and appearance.
The station’s location is strategic. It serves the planned city of Bintaro Jaya. Several important educational institutions are nearby. These include the College of Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics STMKG and State Finance Polytechnic STAN.
Pondok Ranji Station is elevated 25 metres above sea level. It is one of two stations serving the Bintaro housing area. Jurangmangu Station is the other. It lies about 2 kilometers southwest.
Pondok Ranji is on the KRL Commuterline Green Line. This line connects Tanah Abang and Rangkasbitung. If you’re heading towards Rangkasbitung Pondok Ranji is the third station from Tanah Abang. You cannot transfer to other lines here.
The station has two railway lines. Line 1 goes towards Serpong. Line 2 goes towards Tanah Abang. Platforms can accommodate 10-car trains. A pedestrian tunnel ensures passenger safety. It eliminates the need to cross the tracks.
Outside the station you will find supporting transportation options. These include angkots share taxis with various routes. Bintaro Plaza is a nearby mall only a short walk away. Pasar Modern Bintaro Sektor 2 offers a taste of local market life.
In memory of Kyai Ranji the local community honored him. A community hall at the sub-district office is named Gd Ki Ranji. A newly built mosque also carries his name Musholla Al-Ranji.
Pondok Ranji is more than a train station. It’s a reminder of a respected figure. Kyai Ranji’s legacy lives on in the area’s name. The station connects people to their destinations.
