Deep in the heart of South Jakarta, nestled between the urban sprawl and whispers of a bygone era, lies Pondok Cabe Ilir. Pondok Cabe Ilir wasn’t always the bustling community it is today. Imagine a dense, primeval forest stretching as far as the eye can see, ruled by the distant Cirebon Kingdom. In the 16th century, brave pioneers, known as punggawa, ventured into this wilderness. They began to carve out a settlement, transforming the landscape. One of these pioneers was a remarkable figure known as Mak Normie, a skilled military leader and Islamic preacher. She was granted the area now known as Pondok Cabe Ilir. Mak Normie, along with her ten children, laid the foundation for the community that thrives here today. Pondok Cabe Ilir also welcomed another group of settlers in the 17th century. These were Chinese exiles, banished from Batavia (present-day Jakarta) by the Dutch East India Company for their rebellion. Together, these two groups, the descendants of Mak Normie and the Chinese exiles, forged a unique bond. They cultivated the land, growing chili peppers, corn, sugar palms, and other crops, leaving a lasting legacy on the area. Their descendants still reside in Pondok Cabe Ilir, a testament to their resilience and shared history. A pivotal landmark in Pondok Cabe Ilir is the Masjid Agung Al-Ikhlas, one of Banten’s oldest mosques, believed to have been built near Mak Normie’s dwelling in the 16th century. The mosque underwent a significant renovation in the 19th century, when it received a more modern roof. Stories passed down through generations tell of miraculous occurrences during the renovation. It is said that the necessary building materials, such as stones and tiles, mysteriously appeared as needed. The mosque stands as a symbol of the community’s enduring faith. Pondok Cabe Ilir, however, wasn’t immune to the changes brought about by modernization. In 1972, parts of Pondok Cabe were displaced to make way for an airport built by Pertamina, further transforming the landscape. The airport, though small, remains active to this day. Pondok Cabe Ilir has evolved into a modern, densely populated area, attracting newcomers seeking opportunities and contributing to its ever-changing character. Despite the relentless march of progress, Pondok Cabe Ilir retains echoes of its rich history, a tapestry woven from wilderness, pioneering spirit, and cultural fusion.
