“Isn’t she a beauty?” a voice muses beside you.

Welcome to the Point Resolution Estuary Bridge. This bridge isn’t just a way to get from A to B. It’s a statement.

The Point Resolution Bridge replaced an older, less inspiring structure. That old bridge had stood since the 1930s. By the early 2000s it was structurally unsound.

Auckland Council held a competition for a replacement design. Warren and Mahoney, a New Zealand architectural firm, won. They envisioned something sculptural. Something elegant. Something iconic.

Look at the steelwork. Notice how the steel supporting the deck subtly echoes the original bridge? It mirrors its three arches.

Consider the concrete deck. Its curved shape reminds some of a ship’s hull. Artist Henriata Nicholas added etched patterns. These patterns look like delicate water ripples. The Māori call them pungarungaru.

Originally three options existed. Restoration of the old bridge was one idea. Continuing additions made in the 1970s was another. But a new bridge won out.

The engineers faced a challenge. They had to ensure stability. The concrete beams are heavy. The steel supports appear delicate. They needed to withstand earthquakes.

The bridge’s design incorporates a post-tensioned concrete beam. It’s a hull-like shape. This connects the bridge visually to the harbour and yachts.

The bridge cantilevers over the water’s edge. You get a direct view of Rangitoto Island from here. The location is fantastic.

The concrete deck feels like a superyacht or waka hull. The steel exoskeleton cradles it. The deck appears to float.

Henriata Nicholas’s water ripple pattern is deepest at the bottom. It gets shallower as it rises. It’s subtle. It’s like an engraving.

The bridge uses diamond shapes morphed into triangles. This gives sharp edges. These edges create light and dark. You see the form more clearly.

Imagine a small cafe here. A place to sit and soak in the view. The architect even designed an extension. It would have cantilevered over the foreshore. People could have taken wedding photos here.

Unfortunately, planners worried about coastal resource consents. The extension was scrapped. But even without it, the Point Resolution Bridge remains a significant asset. It will stand here for many years to come.
