Did the wind always howl this fiercely around Point Bonita Lighthouse? Point Bonita Lighthouse has stood sentinel at the Golden Gate’s treacherous entrance for over 150 years. It’s a beacon of hope for mariners navigating the swirling mists and powerful currents. The original Point Bonita Lighthouse, built in 1855, stood proudly atop the highest hill, a full 306 feet above the churning waves. However, its lofty perch proved problematic. The thick fog, a common guest on the West Coast, frequently obscured the light, rendering it invisible to ships below. A new location was chosen, a perilous spot at the very tip of Point Bonita, a mere 124 feet above the waves. This move necessitated a feat of human ingenuity and grit. In the late 19th century, Chinese laborers, armed with nothing but hand tools, carved a 118-foot tunnel through solid rock. Imagine the echoing clang of metal against stone, the rhythmic chipping that resonated through the dark, damp passage. This tunnel, a testament to human perseverance, leads to the current Point Bonita Lighthouse. The journey, however, doesn’t end there. The final leg to the lighthouse involves crossing a heart-stopping suspension bridge. This bridge, swaying gently in the wind, is the only one of its kind in the United States, providing the sole access to a lighthouse. The original light’s fog signal was just as unique. A 24-pounder siege gun, a relic from the Army, boomed its warning across the fog-laden waters, the first fog signal on the West Coast. The lighthouse keeper, tasked with firing the cannon, faced a herculean task, sometimes firing continuously for three days with minimal rest. The Point Bonita Lighthouse, manned until 1980, was the last staffed lighthouse in California. Today, automated and overseen by the Coast Guard, it remains a vital aid to navigation. It also stands as a monument to human ingenuity and resilience, a shining beacon in the swirling mists of the Golden Gate.
