Atop Angel Island stands Point Blunt Light a beacon of history and maritime significance. Established in 1915 its story unfolds against the backdrop of San Francisco Bay. Initially overseen by the personnel at Angel Island Light Station at Point Knox Point Blunt Light gained its own dedicated watchroom in 1960. This new watchroom offered an unparalleled view of the entire San Francisco Bay.

The year 1961 marked a pivotal moment. New quarters were completed at Point Blunt. The Coast Guard relocated personnel here discontinuing the manning of Southampton Shoals Light Station. Point Blunt now controlled both its own light and fog signals as well as those of Southampton Shoals and Raccoon Strait. The station even provided specialized direction finder calibration services. Imagine the scene four family units each with three bedrooms housing Coast Guard families. Two units were owned by the Coast Guard. Two were leased from the State of California. One small boat and a pickup truck served the station.

The Point Blunt Light Station was manned until 1976. That year automation transformed the station. The original lighthouse structure was removed. The watch room building was adapted to house the automated light and fog signal. The transition to automation marked the end of an era for the on-site personnel. Yet Point Blunt Light continues to stand as a testament to the dedication of those who once kept watch over the bay.

The lighthouse’s location itself is intriguing. In 1960 the bay was filled between Angel Island’s southeastern point and Point Blunt Rock. This transformed Point Blunt into an exclave of San Francisco County. The land became a federal enclave yet the area below mean high tide remained under California’s control. This unique jurisdictional status added another layer of complexity to Point Blunt’s story.

Today Point Blunt Light remains a silent sentinel. Its story echoes the evolution of maritime technology. It also reflects the complex history of San Francisco Bay and its strategic importance. It stands as a lasting symbol of human ingenuity and perseverance against the elements. A visit to Point Blunt Light is a journey through time a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the enduring human presence in this dynamic landscape.
