A crumbling monument to a forgotten faith. That’s the Pogány-torony. Right before you stands this enigmatic six-sided tower. It’s a peculiar structure perched atop Aranyhegy. Built in 1934 its history is far more complex than its simple appearance suggests.

The Pogány-torony wasn’t just a lookout. It was a symbol. A symbol of the Turanian Society. This group sought a return to ancient Hungarian beliefs. They believed Saint Stephen’s conversion to Christianity had cursed Hungary to division. They aimed to reverse this supposed curse. The Pogány-torony was intended as the first of many worship places for this revived faith.

The Turanian Society was a fascinating blend of academics and fervent nationalists. They explored the linguistic and cultural links between diverse groups. These groups included Finns Turks and Mongols. They saw themselves as part of a larger Turanian family. This ideology was infused with a strong sense of national identity. Especially after the loss of territory after World War I.

The Pogány-torony’s construction wasn’t easy. The authorities weren’t keen on the Turanian Society’s activities. They often clashed with the police. The official opening in 1935 was interrupted by police. They dispersed the crowd with drawn swords. Even the original plans faced resistance. The tower’s designation was changed from ‘memorial tower’ to the less controversial ‘observation tower’. This ensured permission was granted.

Originally thirteen meters high the Pogány-torony was designed by Tăubel Géza and built by Wührl Géza. A bronze Turul bird once graced its top. A Turul is a mythical Hungarian bird of prey. Inside there was an altar. Neither the bird nor the altar remains today.

After World War II the ÁVH used the tower for air surveillance. Legend claims Szakasits Árpád was briefly held there. The 1956 revolution badly damaged the tower. Its topmost level collapsed. The Pogány-torony changed hands several times since then. Neglect and deliberate damage left it in ruins. Yet it still stands. A stubborn testament to a complex and controversial past.

Despite its state the Pogány-torony remains intriguing. Its location offers breathtaking views of the city. It’s a glimpse into a unique chapter of Hungarian history. A chapter often overlooked but certainly not forgotten. The Pogány-torony’s future is uncertain. But its story is one that resonates with Budapest’s rich and sometimes turbulent past.
