Act No 10 of 1870 was key. It gave money for the capital’s development. Podmaniczky vowed to use his strength for Budapest. The Outer Ring Road was built. Sugárút also went up. Sewers were built. Embankments protected the city from floods. New city districts grew. Podmaniczky’s role was to reconcile differing views.

He was the intendant of the National Theatre. This was between 1875 and 1886. He separated the People’s Theatre and the Opera House. These were independent from the National Theatre.

Podmaniczky was a recognizable figure. He was tall and thin. People knew him by his checkered overcoat. His nickname was “Baron Pepita”. He was popular in Budapest. He helped develop the city and its art scene. Podmaniczky never married. He had no family. Budapest was his only love. People called him the groom of Budapest. From 1889, he led the Liberal Party. He also presided over the Adria Insurance Company.

The Vasárnapi Ujság said goodbye to him upon his death. The National Theatre became an art institution under him. He performed all his duties faithfully. He did not avoid any burden.

This statue is about four meters tall. It sits in Podmaniczky Frigyes Square. It’s near the Arany János Street metro station. The statue shows Podmaniczky holding a small Pallas Athéné statue.

After 1945, his name was not mentioned for some time. Mihály Ráday wrote about him in 1982. He proposed the memorial. He thought people should know who helped create Budapest.

In 2019, the square was renovated. The statue was restored. It was moved to the southwest corner of Arany János Street. The statue serves as a meeting point. It enhances the square.
