“Did you know that the Plunket Avenue Overbridge is more than just a way to cross the road?” It is an integral part of Auckland’s infrastructure. The Plunket Avenue Overbridge plays a vital role in connecting communities.
This bridge is a key piece of the puzzle. It maintains local connections. It carries two lanes of traffic over SH20. The bridge spans 205 meters.
Back in 2021, there were intersection improvements planned near here. Specifically, at the intersection of Wiri Station Road and Plunket Avenue. The goal was to make it safer and easier to navigate. They proposed installing traffic lights.
Interestingly, there was a proposal to paint ‘Keep Clear’ road markings. These were for St John Ambulance. A push button was to be installed. This button would give emergency vehicles a ‘green light phasing’. It would help them exit Plunket Avenue quickly.
Fast forward to 2025, and Plunket Avenue faced a temporary closure. It was shut down between Keith Hay Drive and Falcon Avenue for five weeks. This closure was part of the SH20-1 Manukau Extension project.
The closure was necessary to complete the Plunket Avenue Bridge. They needed to build new motorway lanes underneath it. Services were relocated. The road pavement was constructed across the bridge’s length.
Tommy Parker, NZTA’s State Highways Manager, understood the inconvenience. However, he emphasized the bridge’s importance. It was the final structure of the project. The work was a significant step. It would benefit Manukau residents. It also provided a vital connection between SH1 and Auckland Airport.
The Manukau Extension motorway project cost $210 million. The project included a 4.5-kilometer extension. It featured two lanes in each direction. This connected the Southern and Southwestern Motorways. It also helped ease congestion on local roads. These roads included Wiri Station Road and Great South Road.
The motorway forms the southern end of the Western Ring Route. This route spans 48 kilometers. It offers an alternative to SH1 between Manukau and Albany.
The Plunket Avenue Overbridge stands as a testament to progress. It highlights Auckland’s commitment to improving infrastructure. It ensures better connections for its communities. It may seem like just a bridge. But it is a vital artery in Auckland’s transportation network.
