Ever wondered how Dubrovnik defended its eastern flank? That’s where Ploče Gate comes in. Ploče Gate stands as the main entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old Town from the east. It’s more than just an entry point. It’s a journey through time and masterful defense.

The history of Ploče is quite interesting. The first mention of Ploče was in 1387. It was referred to as a bay. A merchant from Dubrovnik planned to take a cattle shipment there. He wanted to sell it in Dubrovnik.

The Outer Gate of Ploče shows architectural skill. Mihajlo Hranjac designed it in 1628. The two bridges that lead to Revelin Fortress date back to the 15th century. Paskoje Miličević, the mastermind behind the Pile Gate bridges, also created these.

Interestingly, the inner section of Ploče Gate once bore the name Gate of Saint Luka. The doors here are quite small. They showcase a Romanesque style.

The Revelin Fortress is key to Ploče’s defense. It was built into the outer section of the gate. This provided an excellent vantage point. From here, guards watched for potential threats approaching from the east.

Old Town was divided into two settlements by a marsh before the 13th century. The walls were built between the 14th and 15th centuries.

Ploče Gate is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The gate has appeared in film projects. These include Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones. The gate featured in Game of Thrones season 5.

While not as ornate as Pile Gate, Ploče shares similar defensive features. It has both inner and outer sections.

The gate connects to a stone bridge. A statue of Sveti Vlaho stands here. He is the patron saint of Dubrovnik.

You can reach Ploče Gate easily by public transport. Take Dubrovnik Bus Line 8.

Ploče Gate offers more than just passage. It provides a tangible link to Dubrovnik’s past. It reveals the city’s strategic brilliance. As you pass through, imagine the centuries of watchful eyes. Think of the countless feet that have walked this path before you. It’s a powerful reminder of Dubrovnik’s enduring strength and beauty.
