Journey back to 1878. Picture a small farming community, Pleasant Mound, just three miles east of what we now know as Dallas. Here, at the crossroads of Scyene Road and Buckner Boulevard, stood the Pleasant Mound Methodist Church. The church wasn’t always at this location. Its roots trace back to a Union Church in Scyene, a shared space where several denominations worshipped together. The Pleasant Mound Methodist Church congregation carried this tradition of unity with them to their new home. Newton J. and Catherine Beeman Hustead, prominent members of the community, generously donated land for the church and an adjoining cemetery. The first church building, completed in 1881, quickly proved too small for the growing congregation. A larger structure replaced it in 1885, only to be rebuilt again in 1895 due to storm damage and the ever-increasing membership. The Pleasant Mound Methodist Church Plaque commemorates this rich history. It stands as a testament to the community’s faith and resilience. The church continued to thrive as a center of community life. However, after 1900, the other denominations began to establish their own congregations. Despite this, the spirit of unity remained strong. The congregations continued to gather for annual homecomings from 1910 to 1953, a beautiful testament to their shared history. The current Pleasant Mound Methodist Church building, erected in 1954 on land purchased nearby, represents another chapter in this enduring story. This plaque serves as a reminder of the church’s humble beginnings and its significant role in the development of this area. It honors the spirit of community, resilience, and faith that continues to shape Pleasant Mound’s identity.
