Pleasant Grove Baptist Church has a rich history rooted in faith. Its origins trace back to a need for a closer place of worship. Members of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church wanted this. They pooled their resources and purchased land for just $10.00.
Early leaders included Sister Dorothy Marie Denson-Dodd and Brothers Eli Whidby and Eliza Denson. Also Brother Abe Lee and their wives contributed. Their vision shaped Pleasant Grove’s early years.
Construction of the original church involved many dedicated individuals. Deacons R. A. Denson and M.C. Custard were key figures. Sisters Josie Custard, Charity Davis and Emma Custard also helped. Reverend B. I. Whidby and Deacons L. Lee, William Fletcher, Green Williams and Ned Edmond all played their part. Their collective effort was truly a labor of love.
In 2003, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church received a generous gift. Sister Audrey Bell Whiting donated property. This was in memory of her mother, Sister Carrie Lee Edmond Denson. A new church was built and dedicated on September 24, 2006.
Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church has been guided by many spiritual leaders. Reverend Eli. S. Whidby Jr. served as a pastor and moderator. Other ministers include M.V. Fletcher, E. S. Smith and E. S. Dancy. V. R. Jefferson, A. F. Bass and B. J. Plattenburg also served. Reverend Nehemiah Fifer served for nearly 25 years. Reverend Jesse Jones Jr. also contributed to the church’s spiritual growth. Since August 12, 2018, Pastor Micheal Denson, Sr. has led the congregation.
Pleasant Grove is not just about its past. It is also about its present and future. The church actively engages in missions. It supports various ministry groups and coordinates disaster relief training. They promote participation in missions conferences. They sponsor community events. Pleasant Grove targets more than 40 mission activities a year.
Pleasant Grove has an original church bell that is over 103 years old. It stands as a symbol of the community’s enduring faith. It was dedicated in September 2021.
Pleasant Grove Food Pantry is connected to the church. It is located at 1331 Baywood St in Dallas. The pantry supports families in zip codes 75217, 75227 and 75253. It offers client choice shopping on Mondays. Family food boxes are available on Tuesdays. The Pet Food Pantry operates on the second Tuesday of each month. The Senior Hygiene Closet is open on the fourth Thursday.
