Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Chicago’s South Side, Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church has stood as a testament to faith and resilience for nearly a century. Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church’s story begins in 1926, not on this very spot, but at 44th and State Street. A small group of families, led by Rev. B. Evans, formed the church’s foundation. The North Wood River District Association, under the guidance of Rev. C. H. Griffin, supported this nascent congregation. Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church’s journey has been marked by both trials and triumphs. The church has called several pastors to lead its flock, each leaving their mark on its history. From Rev. Evans to Rev. J. A. Armstrong, who moved the church to 4502 S. Dearborn, and Rev. B. H. Hawthorne, each pastor contributed to the church’s spiritual development. The arrival of Rev. Ernest Lee Strawhorn in 1942 marked a turning point. Under his leadership, the church purchased the former Phyllis Wheatly home at 3256 S. Rhodes Ave. This new location fostered growth, witnessing the formation of the Young Adult Choir, Usher Board, and Beautifying Club. The church continued to flourish, eventually moving to 5765-67 S. Wentworth Ave. In 1959, under the leadership of Rev. Otis Black Sr., Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church held its first Vacation Bible School. This two-week program became a cornerstone of the church’s community outreach. Then, in 1961, Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church found its current home at 140-46 West 59th Street. The church acknowledges the significant contributions of Mr. A. R. Leak, a steadfast supporter during challenging times. His generosity helped ensure the church’s financial stability. The church thrived under Pastor Strawhorn’s leadership for 34 years, fostering active participation in local, state, and national Baptist bodies. Following his passing in 1976, the church called upon one of its own, Rev. Steve C. Chew, to continue the legacy. The church purchased new seats, a bus, a van, and even a parsonage. Tragedy struck in 1981 when a fire destroyed the church building. Undeterred, the congregation held services at the South Special Education Center, demonstrating unwavering faith. Pastor Chew rallied the members to rebuild without incurring debt. Their collective determination led to the groundbreaking ceremony in 1983, and the triumphant return to the rebuilt sanctuary on Easter Sunday, 1984. More recently, Rev. Ray Charles Bonney, Pastor Chew’s assistant, became the seventh pastor. His tenure witnessed the addition of a steeple, sign, parking lot, and stained-glass windows. Rev. Gregory T. Posley, Sr., Pastor Bonney’s assistant, became the eighth pastor, continuing the tradition of internal leadership. Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church stands tall, a beacon of hope. Its story echoes through the generations, a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community.
