Clutching my sketchbook, I paused at Plazoleta Miguel Carlos Victorica. The air hummed with the echoes of La Boca’s vibrant pulse. Plazoleta Miguel Carlos Victorica offered a tranquil respite. This small plaza, nestled in the heart of La Boca, pays homage to a remarkable Argentine artist, Miguel Carlos Victorica. He was a prominent member of the La Boca art movement in the early 20th century. Born into an aristocratic family in Buenos Aires in 1884, Victorica defied expectations. He chose to immerse himself in the working-class neighborhood of La Boca, finding inspiration in its colorful streets and vibrant inhabitants. He established his studio on Avenida Don Pedro de Mendoza, right in the Vuelta de Rocha area.
Victorica studied under renowned artists like Eduardo Sívori and Ernesto de la Cárcova. He even received a grant to study in Paris. He worked in the studio of Louis-Marie Désiré-Lucas. This experience broadened his artistic horizons. Yet, it was the spirit of La Boca that truly captivated him. He saw beauty in the “blood of the twilights” and the “starry shadows of its nights.” He appreciated the neighborhood’s rejection of the unnecessary, proclaiming La Boca “a school where there are no ‘abysses’ but reality, beauty of lights and shadows.”
Plazoleta Miguel Carlos Victorica isn’t just a place to admire; it’s a portal to understanding Victorica’s artistic soul. His works, often depicting landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and portraits of local characters, captured the essence of La Boca. He used oil, pastel, and pencil on canvas, cardboard, and even burlap. His art graced prestigious venues like the National Salon and museums in Argentina and abroad. He even won the Grand Prize of Honor at the National Salon in 1941 for his painting “Bohemian Kitchen.” Standing here, in this plaza dedicated to his memory, we can almost feel the brushstrokes of his vibrant world coming alive. The energy of La Boca, the whispers of tango music, the scent of the river – it’s all here, woven into the fabric of this place. Victorica’s artistic legacy continues to inspire. Plazoleta Miguel Carlos Victorica serves as a reminder of his remarkable talent and his deep connection to this vibrant neighborhood.
